The StowMate Story
Our story begins in the fall of 2003 with a love of the great outdoors and….fishing. This time of year sees an advance of colder weather in the North and a migration of “snow birds” to the Florida sunshine.
A couple of dear family members share the passion for fishing the mangroves and flats of Southwest Florida. Uncle Bob (snow bird from Erie, Pennsylvania) and his nephew Jake (Florida resident), would launch the boat early in the morning and spend the day in search of the elusive Snook or Redfish.
Being new to Florida flats fishing, Uncle Bob did not realize how important it was to remain as quiet as possible while poling their way into the back waters where the big ones live. The sharp abrupt noise of a storage hatch closing can easily spook the fish, and drive them further back in the mangroves.
The nephew Jake , who is also my brother, realized he had to do something to remedy this situation. If he could have the fishing gear readily available on deck instead of buried in a hatch, this would eliminate the noise factor.
After dwelling on possible solutions, Jake consulted with me concerning his dilemma. We set an objective to have the storage easy to install without using special tools or additional hardware (which might require screws or drilling holes in the boat). We worked together on various product designs and prototypes and tested a number of different materials and attachment methods. Our very first StowMate® Storage Organizer was a result of this collaborative and iterative process.
This first StowMate® product took advantage of unused space between structural bars and piping on Jake 's leaning post and poling platform. These organizers ended up being a variety of pockets that attached semi-permanently to the leaning post and poling platform with marine grade strapping and D-rings. StowMate® products are constructed of very strong water repellant vinyl coated polyester mesh, and sewn together with acrylic binding and UV resistant thread.
As our product line for strap-on products evolved to include T-Tops and Towers, we recognized a need for storage organizers for those vessels that did not have tubular structures. And so was born our line of Stik n Stow Storage Organizers.
Stik n Stow products utilize the newest and strongest “hook and loop” technology for attachment. The “loop” is sewn directly to the storage organizer, while the matching “hook” side is a low profile, waterproof, industrial strength adhesive backed strip. Just clean the surface, apply the adhesive strips, and stick on your storage organizer.
